The house is locked, the van is hitched and the fridge magnets are waiting. A grey nomad retirement gift for anyone swapping the commute for Highway 1.

Save for later ♡

Some people retire to the couch. Others buy a caravan, a UHF radio and a very large map.

This mug is for the second lot. It is a grey nomad retirement gift for anyone whose retirement plan has wheels.

A Grey Nomad Retirement Gift for the Road Ahead

It’s a loose, hand-painted style watercolour in outback colours. A red 4WD tows a little white and blue caravan down a winding dirt road, kicking up a plume of dust, with a rust-red range and a low orange sun behind.

Above it floats a map of Australia with a dotted route running right around the coast. Underneath, in dark brush script: “Gone to do the Big Lap”.

For Mum, Dad or Both of Them

It suits a couple heading off together as much as a solo traveller, and it packs neatly into the van. Happy hour at the caravan park just found its mug.

Capacity is 11oz, which works out to around 325mL of tea at the camp table.

Why It Makes a Good Grey Nomad Retirement Gift

Caravanners are fussy about what earns a spot in the van. Space is tight, and everything has to be useful. A mug passes the test easily, and one with their own trip on it becomes the favourite by the first free camp.

That is what makes it such a practical grey nomad retirement gift: it goes on the trip with them, where a framed print or a bottle would stay at home.

Retirement Gifts for Mum and Dad

If your parents are the ones heading off, this is an easy pick. Retirement gifts for dad and mum can be hard to choose when they insist they need nothing. Buy two so they have a matching pair at the camp table, and shipping is free.

Big Lap mug: your questions answered

About this mug

What is the Big Lap?

It is the classic road trip right around Australia, usually following Highway 1. Plenty of retirees do it by caravan, which is why this makes such a fitting grey nomad retirement gift.

What does the Big Lap mug design show?

A watercolour of a red 4WD towing a caravan along a red dirt road, with a map of Australia and a dotted coastal route above it, and "Gone to do the Big Lap" in brush script.

Do you have other retirement gifts for mum and dad?

Yes. Our retirement gift mugs include classy and funny designs that suit parents and grandparents.

Delivery and care

Do you deliver across Australia?

Yes, to every state and territory by Australia Post, and shipping is free when you order 2 or more items. We only ship within Australia.

How is the design printed, and will it last?

Every mug is hand-printed in Australia using sublimation printing on an 11oz ceramic mug. We like to be upfront: like every sublimation print, the colours will gradually soften with use and washing. It is made for everyday drinking, and a favourite mug that has worn in a little is part of its charm.

How do I look after it?

The sublimation print is dishwasher safe, so you can load it up with the rest of the kitchen. To keep the colours looking fresh for longer, a hand wash with a soft sponge is kinder than a scourer.
