In court, barristers refer to the opposing side as “my learned friend”. It is courteous, it is traditional, and depending on how the morning is going, it can be delivered through very slightly gritted teeth.
This mug takes that famous bit of courtroom manners and hands it to the most agreeable character we could think of: a small, round, very pleased-with-itself sheep.
A barrister gift with a woolly sense of humour
Our sheep is dressed for a big day at the Bar. It wears a curled horsehair wig with neat side rolls and two little tails, a black gown, and a crisp white bar jabot at the neck. Tucked under one arm is a tiny brief tied with ribbon, ready for the morning list.
Underneath, “MY LEARNED FRIEND” curves along in rounded navy lettering. The joke works on two levels: the phrase itself, and the fact that a sheep in a barrister’s wig is technically wearing two fleeces. Court wigs are actually made from horsehair, but nobody told the sheep.
Cute, but it knows exactly what it is doing
The illustration is drawn in a soft kawaii style, with simple dot eyes, rosy cheeks and a smug little smile. It is sweet enough to brighten a desk but sharp enough that every barrister who sees it will know precisely which colleague it reminds them of.
The wool, the wig and the gown are all shaded in greys and black, so the design stays clear and bold against a white mug.
Who it suits
It makes a lovely barrister gift for someone joining the Bar, finishing their reading year or celebrating a big win in chambers. Solicitors who regularly brief counsel will enjoy it, as will judges’ associates, moot competitors and law students who have already practised saying the phrase in the mirror.
It is also a gentle way to tell a colleague you respect them, even if you spent the whole hearing disagreeing with everything they said.
The practical bits
This is an 11oz ceramic mug, which works out at roughly 325mL, finished in glossy white with a comfortable handle. It is a good size for a hot drink during a long day of reading in chambers.
We print it in Australia using sublimation, so the artwork is fused into the coating rather than stuck on top. You can put it in the dishwasher or the microwave. As with all sublimation printing, the colours mellow a little over the years, and a gentler wash keeps the sheep looking freshly groomed.
